One of the 'swift' packet boats which took passengers at over 10 miles an hour from Preston to Lancaster or Kendal.  This one is 'Waterwitch'.

This is a mock up of the inside of one of the swift packet boats that ran on the Lancaster Canal in the 1840's.; They used to travel at speeds averaging 10 miles ab hour. As you can see the passengers in first class travelled in comfort as well.

Trip boats went from Hest Bank in the 1940's.

In the early 1900's people still enjoyed messing about in boats and fishing on the canal - even though the silhouette of a boat can be seen in Hincaster Tunnel

Avenham Bridge has been rebuilt as it was when it was the only crossing of the Ribble available to the Lancaster Canal.  Money had run out so no aqueduct was possible across the Ribble. A tramway was built to Walton Summit where goods were again transferred to canal to get the limestone to Wigan - and the coal to Kendal
