Looking south from Bridge 139 at Tewitfield

The end of the navigable section of the canal. This picture shows 'Swiftsure' in front of the culverts bringing the water from the Northern Reaches.  The branch to the left was never finished, but makes a useful place for boats to turn.

Tewitfield.  Just in front of Bridge 98, seen here in the distance, a new housing and marina development is being built.

Budgie Boats waterbus 'Swiftsure' at Tewitfield. This boat runs daily trips in the summer from Carnforth to Lancaster return, with an interlude of an extra trip during lunchtime from Lancaster to the aqueduct - return.

Spring daffodils on the towpath near Borwick.  Bridge no 136 can be seen in the distance.

A busy area of canal at Carnforth.  The building with the new conservatory is an old packet boat house which is now a pub and restaurant - the Canal Turn.

Looking from above the canal towards Warton Crag and the more distant Lake District from between bridges 127 & 128.

Wonderful views can be seen across Morecambe bay towards the Lake District Fells.  Here we are looking from Bolton-le-Sands ( near Bridge 127), with the canal running through the middle of the picture, across the Bay towards the Coniston Range of hills

Looking across Morecambe Bay from above Bolton-le-Sands in the distance you can see the shipbuilding port of Barrow-in-Furness.  This picture is take from above the canal between bridges 127 & 126.

Lovely views of the Lakeland hills can be seen from many parts of the northern part of the navigable section.  This is from bridge 119 in Hest Bank.

Also from near bridge 119 you can see across Morecambe Bay towards Barrow in Furness

Looking south in Lancaster with student accommodation on the right.

Waterwitch pub sign, foot bridge ( no 98a) and student accommodation in Lancaster.

Older student accommodation reflected in the still water in Lancaster.  The wide boat on the left is 'Lady Fiona' who is the last surviving Lancaster Canal barge, but had her name changed from 'Pet' and her superstructure added from the tops of blackpool trams.  These have now been removed and the hull is now in Nantwich undergoing 'restoration'.

British Waterways have restored Aldcliffe boat House. This was built and used in the time of the Packet boats.  The wall is angled so these boats could get in and out.  There was a hoist inside which lifted a boat clear of the water so maintainance could take place.  It is hoped that this building can be made into a museum and that 'Lady Fiona' or 'Pet' can be brought back.

What a lovely place to sit on a sunny day - outside the Waterwitch and by the canal - in Lancaster

South of Lancaster the canal goes into Deep Cutting

Brant Beck Bridge (no 91) at the southern end of Deep Cutting.

The canal goes through Ellel Grange Estate and this lovely bridge was constructed there to enhance the estate. (Bridge No 88)

Here is the entrance to the Glasson Arm.  You can just see the arm of the lock gate through the arch of the bridge (no 85)

A British Waterways working boat moored near the entrance to the Glasson Flight

We wanted to get this bridge right - it's the entrance to the Glasson Flight.

Here you can see the main line of the canal goes straight on and the flight to Glasson Dock goes off to the right.

One of the Glasson Arm locks

The Glasson Arm is quite straight and here, we are looking back to the Bowland Fells

The bottom lock of the canal is just outside what used to be Thurnham Mill and is now a restaurant.  I think it is a Water Babies boat exiting the lock.

There are many boats of both canal and seagoing types moored in Glasson Dock

Back on the mainline this cruiser is aboiut to go through Bridge 79

Near Nateby, people do what they always do around canals - walk the dog, use the boat as a caravan for the weekend, fish, gongoozle and - actually - sail.

Across the flat fields, part of the Pennines, the Bowland Fells can be seen.

Here is the aqueduct over Barton Beck at Hollowforth (br no 38).  Obviously there is usually a lot more water coming under the canal.

As you are able to walk through one of the cylinders of this aqueduct, you are able to viewit from both sides of the canal.
