This book does not claim to be a complete history of the canal. There are many gaps in its story as things which were looked upon as commonplace at the time and went unrecorded would now be of real historical interest. Never the less, this book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history of the cut. It isn't an easy history to read as the author provides a great many facts and figures in a rather condensed form. Around three quarters of the book is dedicated to history rather than walking, so the title is a little misleading.
The walks are linear towpath walks and as such borders almost on a cruising guide. The text remains factual and informative and fulfills its role well. Certainly a book to read both before and during a walk as well as a valuable reference work to keep onboard.
