Janet Rigby was born in Preston and married into a family with a long history of working on the Lancaster Canal. The result of extensive research, Janet has used archived reports, newspapers, tapes, films and interviews. This book is about the people of the canal and their education, housing, horse-keeping, life on board, cargoes, working practices and accidents.

Janet takes us on a journey not only along the 57 miles of the Lancaster Canal, but also through its history spanning more than 200 years. She does this by exploring the daily working life of England’s most northerly canal, something which no other book on the canal has done. The history and geography of canal transport in the area comes to life through the stories of those most involved.

“Life on the Lancaster Canal” is a high quality paperback with 112 pages, and the text is illustrated with many relevant photographs. The book is available from Landy Publishing, 3 Staining Rise, Staining, Blackpool, FY3 0BU for £8 (including p&p).
