The Trust has been closely involved in the steering group with British Waterways, Lancaster City and Lancashire County Councils. Over the past two years we have developed the project and prepared the bid for HLF funding. The Lottery has got lots of money but they don't give it out easily. The bid involved the preparation detailed reports on Heritage Management of this Grade 1 listed structure, on Landscape Management and on public consultation and participation.
The enhancements project will provide improvements to the accessibility and visibility of the structure, a new ramp connecting the towpath and the riverside path below, removal of vegetation from the structure, opening up the vegetation on the riverside to create some viewing points to appreciate the structure, and encouraging more public use and involvement as a help in controlling graffiti and vandalism.
The planned stoppage from January to March 2011 will see work on relining the channel to prevent leakage. A year later a further stoppage will complete the engineering maintenance programme and the enhancement works.
See British Waterways Press Release for more details.
