I hope you’re having a great summer, and I’m not about to spoil it!

We’ve been offered the loan of a digger for a weekend, and we plan to use this to partly demolish Sellet Hall Bridge and then rebuild it to Heritage specifications mainly over the weekend of 31st July / 1st August, but with a preliminary mid-week working party on July 21st. I appreciate we’re in the middle of the holiday season, but any help on those days would be very much appreciated. There’ll be a chance to learn how to build walls using lime mortar and dry stone walling techniques.

On each day, we plan to start work at around 10am and finish at 5 (or later if needed and people are happy). The work site is at Sellet Hall bridge, the first one over the completely dry canal bed if you’re going north, but the meeting point will be at Stainton Crossing bridge, a short walk away. Directions below.

We’ll be able to provide hot drinks, but please bring any other refreshment and food you may need. We have hard hats, hi-viz jackets, gloves, goggles and dustmasks, but you will need to provide your own stout footwear and warm/waterproof clothing.

Even if you can only come for a couple of hours, please let me know the times you are available so that I can schedule the work and ensure that there will be enough people there at the same time to make it worth while. Please especially let me know if you’d be happy to supervise the work for a short session – simply taking responsibility for safety of the volunteers and members of the public, and managing the manpower available. Full guidance and assistance will be available from myself or other officers of the Trust.

Future dates we have in mind for midweek working are Wednesday 18th August and Wednesday 15th September.

Directions to Stainton Crossing Bridge

From the south: Come off the M6 at Junction 36 and turn right, then left at the first roundabout towards Kendal A65. Turn left opposite the Crooklands Hotel towards Milnthorpe, then take the first right signed ‘Lane Ends Farm’. Follow this road for approx 1.4miles, and the road hairpins over the bridge.

From the North: Follow the A65 south from Kendal. Just after the Millers Beck Country Guest House, turn right signed ‘Stainton 1’. Follow this road for about 1.4 miles, through Stainton village, and as you get to a T-junction the bridge is just on your left. If you have sat nav, LA8 0LG will get you very close.
