The Lancaster Canal Trust will be helping IWA North Lancahire and Cumbria host the IWA Campaign Festival at Haslam Park in Preston next year, as part of Preston Guild. The festival itself is over the August Bank holiday weekend (25th -26th August 2012), and any help that can be offered over that weekend would be most appreciated.
Trisha Buzzard is our coordinator for the festival, so if you can help for that weekend (or in the period leading up to it) please contact her direct ( patricia(dot)buzzard(at)waterways(dot)org(dot)uk )
However, as part of the preparations for the festival, we are holding a joint clean up of the canal around the park on Sunday November 13th. It would be good to have a large presence from the Trust, which would confirm our commitment to the project in general, but also showing that we do indeed cover the whole of the canal, and not just the Northern Reaches.
We meet in Haslam Park at 9-30 am to sign in, assemble into groups and for the Safety Talk. We aim to clear litter from the towpath and the canal in the section from the Preston terminal to Bridge 15, the bridge nearest to the Ribble Link.
The meeting point is the carpark within the Park, where there will be a gazebo which will house the refreshments and signing-in point, and where tools can be borrowed and returned. Please make sure you have suitable protective footwear (i.e. NOT open-toed sandals), clothes that won't hurt being muddied and,if possible, hard-wearing waterproof gloves. Items from the canal can be foul, wet, and sharp.
The vehicular entrance to Haslam Park is Bristow Avenue, that is accessed from Blackpool Road from the WEST only, as there is a central reservation that cannot be crossed. Bristow Avenue is the first turning after the rising bridge that goes over the railway and Tom Benson Way. There is parking on the other side of the canal, beside the Sanitary Station, that is accessed by a track that leaves Woodplumpton Road immediately beside the bridge over the canal. If you leave your vehicle here, go back to the bridge to cross the canal, go down to the tow path and then walk away from the city centre (canal on your right) until you reach the gap in the hedge that has an A barrier in it. Go in along that path and keep to the left at path junctions, you will be approaching the car park on your left.
