Happy New Year to all; what better way to get started than a bit of physical work on canal restoration?

We are planning to do a variety of tasks at the Horse Path over Hincaster tunnel. We have a 5 year Management Agreement with BW and English Heritage which covers vegetation management, bridge restoration and dry stone wall maintenance. Weather forecast doesn’t look too good for Sunday but that can change. And the weather doesn’t usually put us off – just come suitably clothed.

Meet at our Millness yard at 9.30am. [Map]

For those of you who don’t know it, it’s on A65, about 3/4 mile from M6 junction 36, heading north towards Crooklands & Kendal, immediately north of where A65 crosses under M6. Alternatively, meet at Hincaster tunnel at 10am. Access to the east end is on Wellheads Lane at grid ref SD 514 851. [Map] (Access to the west end is on Harry Brow just north of Hincaster village at grid ref SD 509 850; walk along the horse path over the hill to the east end.)

I hope to see you on Sunday. If you can let me know in advance by email (trevittr[at]hotmail.com) if you can come that’s always helpful, but you’ll still be welcome if you just turn up.

You can call me on 07944 928723 – but please use this number on working party days only.

For those of you who prefer mid week working parties, who’s available next week on Wed 11th or Thurs 12th – also at Hincaster Horse Path?

We need about 3 people to work with Trevor to remove a particular tree. We have a very small window of opportunity next week to do the job - we won’t be able do it on Sunday.

Please reply to me and Trevor if you can help on this one. trevorcotton(at)btopenworld(dot)com

Advance dates for your 2012 diary;

Sundays 12th February and 11th March will be our next routine working parties; probably doing preparatory works at Stainton for next summer...

Saturdays 21st & 28th July mark the starts of two week-long working parties of WRG (Waterway Recovery Group) when we will be excavating and lining a section of canal bed between Stainton and Sellet Hall prior to extending the water in the canal. This is an exciting prospect of seeing some very visible evidence of our restoration work.

You can join these work camps for a full week – see WRG website www.waterways.org.uk/wrg/ for full details.

Or you can join in locally with activities that LCT will be organising in parallel with the WRG camps; watch this space for details or check out the LCT website nearer the time.

best wishes
