Above Preston

Ashton Basin may be reached by bus or foot from the town via Fylde Road and Tulketh brow. Access is from Tulketh brow and is not marked. Look for the white cottage behind the grey brick wall, just beyond the Church Hall on the north side of the road.

The first half mile of canal lies in a cutting surrounded on both sides by housing, but as you approach bridge 12, Haslam Park opens up to the left, whilst on the right, moorings have been provided on a former coal wharf. A short walk from bridge 12 lies the shopping centre of Lane Ends.

Haslam Park offers pleasant walking and offers municipal bowling greens and tennis courts. From Haslam Park the canal swings westwards bounded by houses on the right but with fields and parkland to the left.

Bridge 13 is the first aqueduct on the canal under which flows Savick brook which the Ribble link trust canalised to provide a route from the Lancaster Canal to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Tarlatan via the rivers Ribble and Douglas.

There is little of note on this stretch, which was untouched by the industrial growth of Preston, and one may find interesting cottages and farms tucked away amongst the modern housing. At bridge 18, the houses finally peter out and the stretch to Lea Road bridge lies in open countryside with only the railway line intruding.
