Between Bolton-le-Sands and Tewitfield the canal provides excellent views across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland Mountains. Close to Thwaite End Bridge on the offside are the remains of lime kilns (private). Passing north into Carnforth there is a large winding hole and wharf. Behind were extensive gravel pits, the gravel being loaded onto canal barges. The winding hole is now the site of Nu-Way Acorn, who hire boats for the day or for a holiday. There is a garage nearby on the A6. The canal passes through Carnforth and quickly out into open countryside.
Carnforth grew from a small village with the coming of first the canal and then the railway. Built around an important railway junction, it is was the former home of the 'Steamtown' museum, a Mecca for rail lovers.
Carnforth is best known as the location for 'Brief Encounter' and the station has been refurbished and contains a Visitor Centre. Further details of the area can be found on the Carnforth Online website
