Holme |
Small craft can be launched from the slipway at Cinderbarrow Culvert. Leaving Cinderbarrow the canal passes through quiet countryside, although one never quite loses the roar from the motorway and the nearby railway occasionally makes its presence known. One soon passes the old wharf that served the village of Burton-in-Kendal. The canal leaves Lancashire and enters Cumbria and soon the village of Holme is reached. Along here can be seen an example of the stone mileposts that marked the distances between Kendal and Lancaster. North of Holme the canal is culverted under North Road, ending an intact three and a half-mile stretch from Cinderbarrow.
Holme is an old grey stone village. New houses have recently been built along the canal and the owners tend the towpath well along their stretch of canal.
Burton-in-Kendal is a large interesting village 800m east of Burton Aqueduct.
