The canal has been cut back approximately one mile from the original terminus near the town centre, to Ashton Basin. However, many features remain. Worth looking for is the stone built warehouse in Heatley Street, whilst nearby on Marsh Lane, the iron railings along the roadside are Parapets of the canal bridge under this road.

Just along Marsh Lane lies the Boatman's public house, which provided stabling for the horses in it's outbuildings, whilst nearby Wharf Street bears witness to the canal's presence, the terminus basins lying buried under the large garage complex on Corporation Street. The tramway which connected the two halves of the canal started at this point and ran southwards towards Walton Summit, under Fishergate.

The Original tunnel has been opened up to provide vehicle access from Corporation Street to the Fishergate centre However visitors may care to walk to Avenham Park near the river, to view a reconstruction of the bridge that carried the tramway over the river and may walk the former route for some distance southwards. The remains of one of the wagons are housed in the town's Harris Museum.
